Hardscaping in Orange County
At Millennium Construction, we design and build hardscapes across the whole property: paver driveways, walkways and entries, retaining and seat walls, steps, pool decks, masonry features and the drainage underneath all of it, delivered by one in-house design-build team from first sketch to final walkthrough.
- Grades, drainage and material transitions drawn in 2D and 3D before excavation
- Compacted base, edge restraint and drainage engineered under every surface
- Family-owned since 2002, backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty
Understanding Hardscape Installation
Hardscape is every permanent surface and structure on a property that is not the house itself, and unlike planting, none of it can be adjusted later. Driveways, walkways, retaining walls, steps, and decks are all load-bearing assemblies, and each one is only as good as the excavation, compaction, and drainage placed beneath it.
Our clients are not just laying pavers. They are building the permanent structure the property sits on, and we engineer it to hold.

Our Hardscape Services
Paver Driveways
Driveways carry the heaviest loads of any surface on a residential property, which makes base depth and compaction more consequential here than anywhere else. We build to the load rather than to the minimum, and pavers let a section be lifted and reset if a utility ever needs access rather than requiring a saw and a patch.
Walkways, Paths and Entries
Front entries, side yard paths and garden walkways in pavers, stone or poured concrete. The approach to a house is the first hardscape anyone sees, and often the most neglected, and getting width, slope and lighting right is what makes a path feel deliberate rather than added.
Retaining Walls and Grade Changes
Structural and decorative walls that hold back soil, create usable terraces and resolve slope. Retaining walls are engineered structures with drainage, reinforcement, and footing requirements behind the face, and walls built without them are the most common hardscape failure we get called to replace.
Steps, Seat Walls and Masonry Features
Stairs, landings, seat walls, planters, columns and veneer work in stone, brick and block. These are the elements that connect levels and define outdoor rooms, and consistent material and detailing across them is what keeps a property from reading as a series of separate projects.
Pool Decks and Surrounds
Decking around pools and spas where slip resistance, heat underfoot, and drainage away from the water all factor into material choice. We coordinate this work with pool construction and remodeling so the deck and the pool finish out together.
Drainage and Site Grading
Surface slope, subsurface drains, catch basins, and grading that moves water away from the house and off finished surfaces. This is specified before any material is selected, because drainage decided after the fact means cutting into work that was already paid for.
Our Hardscape Installation Process
Step 1 – Site Visit and Grade Assessment
We walk the property to understand slope, soil, existing drainage patterns, access for equipment, and where water currently goes during heavy rain. On hardscape projects, the site conditions dictate more of the outcome than the material selection does.
Step 2 – Layout and 3D Design
Our in-house design team develops the work in 2D and 3D, covering footprint, elevations, wall heights, steps, transitions, and material patterns. Level changes and how surfaces meet each other are far easier to resolve rendered than staked out on site.
Step 3 – Material and Pattern Selection
We walk you through paver, stone, and concrete options with recommendations based on load, slip resistance, heat retention, and how each holds up under Southern California sun and coastal air. Color, pattern, banding and wall veneer are locked in at this stage.
Step 4 – Engineering, Permitting and Excavation
Retaining walls above certain heights require engineering and permits, and requirements vary by city. We prepare and submit plans, coordinate with your Orange County jurisdiction, then handle demolition, excavation and rough grading.
Step 5 – Base, Drainage and Installation
Sub-base is compacted in lifts, drainage and wall reinforcement are installed, then surfaces are set and edge restraint placed. Walls, steps and features are built with the same attention behind the face as on it.
Step 6 – Final Walkthrough and Warranty
We verify slope and drainage, complete joint stabilization or sealing where specified, walk the finished work with you, and clean the site. Your project is backed by our 10-year workmanship warranty.
Why Orange County Homeowners Choose Millennium Construction
Hardscape is the easiest work on a property to make look finished and the easiest to build badly. A driveway set on four inches of loose base looks identical to one built correctly for about two years. The difference shows up as settling, separated joints, a wall face that has begun to lean, and water arriving somewhere it was never meant to go.
The Work Below the Surface
Excavation depth, compaction in lifts, drainage, reinforcement, and edge restraint are specified for the actual load and soil rather than to a standard detail. None of it is visible in a finished photograph, and all of it determines whether the finished photograph still looks that way in ten years.
Retaining Walls Built as Structures
Walls holding back soil are engineered assemblies, not stacked block with a facing. Drainage behind the wall, reinforcement, and proper footings are what keep them plumb, and skipping them is why so many walls need replacing well before they should.
Drawn Before It Is Dug
Grades, elevations, wall heights and how each surface meets the next are resolved in 2D and 3D first. Level changes are the hardest part of hardscape to visualize from a plan and the most expensive thing to correct after excavation.
One Contractor for the Whole Property
Hardscape rarely arrives alone. Because we also build patios, outdoor kitchens, pools, fire features and landscape, the surfaces, grades and materials across your property are planned as one scheme instead of matched after the fact by whoever comes next.

Frequently Asked Questions
Every permanent non-planted element on a property: driveways, walkways, retaining and seat walls, steps, pool decks, masonry features, and the grading and drainage beneath them. Patios fall under hardscape as well, and we handle those as a dedicated service given how much of a project they usually represent.
Each behaves differently under load, heat, and movement. Pavers flex with settlement and can be lifted and reset for repairs or utility access. Concrete gives a continuous surface at a lower cost per square foot. Natural stone offers character at a higher price and more variability. We match the material to the application rather than using one everywhere.
Above certain heights, and in some conditions regardless of height, yes on both counts. Requirements vary by city across Orange County. A wall retaining soil is a structural element carrying real load, and we identify what yours requires during design rather than mid-build.
Almost always because of what is underneath. A base that was too shallow, compacted in one pass instead of in lifts, or laid without edge restraint or drainage will move, and pavers will separate at the joints while concrete cracks. The surface is rarely the problem.
Yes, and it is often the reason to do the project. Slope, surface drainage, subsurface drains, and catch basins are designed into the hardscape rather than added later. Water arriving at the house or pooling on a surface is a grading problem, and grading is what hardscape work is.
The timeline depends on square footage, wall heights, engineering, permitting, access for equipment, and material availability, so we will not quote a schedule before seeing the property. We give you a realistic timeline once design and selections are set.
All of our work is backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty. We also carry five CSLB license classifications, including C-8 for concrete and C-29 for masonry, and $1,000,000 in general liability and workers’ compensation coverage.
